Description

Product Lifecycle Management, or PLM, is not exactly a new concept but, until relatively recently, the sheer volume of data involved in tracking every component of even a moderately complex product, right through the cycle, from preliminary design to final disposal, not to mention the complexity of interfacing effectively with design, production and commercial systems, put PLM firmly in the 'wouldn't it be good if ...?' box. As Supply Chain Europe discovered at OracleWorld, in San Francisco, late last year, that is no longer the case. Oracle recently acquired Agile PLM: such is the rate of change in the PLM space that many may still know the product by its previous name Prodika. Dan Miklovic, from Gartner, claims that PLM is currently "the fastest-growing enterprise application area, outpacing ERM, SCM, even CRM in manufacturing: a $15 billion market with 15% growth, whereas the ERP market is basically flat."
